Ennis softball posts five wins to keep their season record unblemished
The Mustangs capped the week with a 7th inning come from behind win on the road against Plains
The Ennis Mustangs pushed their record to 7-0 after posting five wins last week. The first was a 18-5 win against Dillon followed by double header sweeps against Thompson Falls and Plains. The last game against Plains saw the team trail for the first time this season in the seventh inning before coming back from a 3-5 deficit to take the walkoff win.
“I was really proud of the character they showed in battling back,” said head coach Andy Thomas of the comeback win and two game sweep of Plains on the road. “We got strong pitching performances again from Adi Wood and Kahryn Vaudrin. Everyone in the lineup carded a hit on the day. Adi Wood was 7 for 8. Cassidy Hess was 4 for 6. Ruby Boggus was 6 for 9 with a home run. Kahryn Vaudrin had a home run as well.”
The comeback win was the cherry on top of a week where the Mustang bats were lighting up the scoreboard. Ennis outscored their opponents 74-35 over the course of the five games.
“The girls have been working hard and have been focused,” said Thomas. “We are playing well as a team. Our bats have been coming through with everyone in the lineup contributing.”
The day before the trip to Plains, the Mustangs defeated Troy twice to sweep the double header. Thomas pointed towards some individual highlights from the statlines.
“Adi Wood pitched a gem in game one and Kahryn Vaudrin pitched all 4 innings of a shortened game (run rule for the Mustangs), allowing only two earned runs,” he began. “For the twin bill: Adi Wood was 5 for 6; Addi Rowe was 4 for 5; Kahryn Vaudrin was 4 for 8; and Ruby Boggus was 4 for 8 with a home run.”
Despite the fast start, Thomas and the Mustangs know there is still a lot of work to do this season.
“We need to continue to work on all aspects of the game,” he said. “Hitting is always an area to improve upon. I think the other thing at this point is situational awareness and a lot of that will come with game reps but we try to mock it up in practice as best we can.”
The keys Thomas sees to continuing the Mustang’s success are pretty straightforward.
“We’re just reminding the girls that we are a team and we are in this together,” he began.”It is also important to understand that mistakes will be made, strikeouts will happen, but you need to develop the ability to learn from those and move on, while staying positive. The coaches and I place importance on having a fun environment. When the girls are relaxed, they play their best. So trying to find that balance of playing loose but playing with focus and confidence.”
Next up for Ennis are a home game against Manhattan on the ninth and a trip to Three Forks on the 10th followed by a trip to Anaconda for a double header on the 14th.
