Up to 20% of Madison County voters will have to choose between voting in the HD 69 election and choosing their party’s candidates for national elections
Because neither the Democratic or Libertarian Party fielded candidates, the race between incumbent Ken Walsh and challenger Trevor Walter will be decided on the June 2 Republican primary ballot
In the June 2 primary election only people choosing to complete a Republican ballot will be able to vote for either Ken Walsh or Trevor Walter, the two Republican candidates vying for the Montana House District 69 position. That means that everyone choosing to complete a Democrat or Libertarian ballot for the election will not be voting on the race according to ballot information provided by the Madison County Clerk & Recorder/Election Administrator.
Madison County voter registration is non-partisan, so the Clerk and Recorder’s office does not have a breakdown of how many Democrats or Libertarians there are registered to vote in the county. In the 2024 primary election the number of voters who chose to fill out a Democrat or Libertarian ballot was about 21.8% of the total turnout for the election according to the Montana Secretary of State's online reporting of election results. This includes Democratic and Libertarian ballots filed in the HD 60 race as well.
The winner of the Republican primary between Walsh and Walter will go on to the general election ballot, but will be unopposed on that ballot due to the other parties not fielding candidates.
Voters in Madison County are not required to register to vote with a party affiliation. That means that on Election Day, voters can complete whichever of the three ballots they choose and turn it in to be counted. The federal primary election will be held on June 2, 2026.
