Post New Year's spike in numbers
Madison County COVID update
From Jan. 3-11, Madison County reported 42 new coronavirus cases. There are 33 active cases in the county and 97 enrolled close contacts under quarantine from the past seven days. One new hospitalization was reported in the past week.
“We got hit hard,” Madison County Public Health Nurse Melissa Brummell said. Madison County has had 558 total COVID-19 cases through the course of the pandemic.
“Unfortunately, we do have quite…a significant amount tying back to group gatherings,” Brummell said of these most recent numbers.
Most have been New Year’s related, she said. During contact tracing calls, individuals often inform the Madison County Public Health Department (MCPDH) of gatherings they attended, and MCPHD asks contacts about their exposure. MCPHD accesses risk and deduces information from these communications.
“If you get two or three cases when they’re listing 15-30 close contacts that’s bad,” Brummell said, and shows that group gatherings are still commonplace.
