Four people were attacked late Saturday night in Virginia City and authorities are looking for suspects.
The attacks happened in two separate incidents, said Madison County Undersheriff Roger Thompson. One incident occurred outside the Bale of Hay Saloon as four people from Bozeman were crossing the street at about 2 a.m. The group included three men and one woman. One of the men and the woman were the last out of the four to leave the saloon. The man was jumped by either two or three attackers and knocked to the ground where the attackers began to kick him. His two friends came to his aid only to be assaulted as well, Thompson said.
The woman called 911 and then a car driving through Virginia City stopped and two other men jumped out to break up the melee and the attackers fled into the night.
Madison County Sheriff deputies were on the scene in 10 minutes and searched through Virginia City but didn’t turn up any suspects.
The three victims were all treated by ambulance crews, but not taken to the hospital, Thompson said.
Authorities are also following a lead about a Whitehall man being attacked in the same manner on the same night, he said. Information about that assault is still being gathered.
The odd nature of the attacks is puzzling, Thompson said.
“Apparently they were random and unprovoked,” he said. “There’s nothing to indicate there was any disturbance or confrontation before any of this occurred.”
The four victims were in town for the opening night of the Virginia City Players and then went to the saloon after the show, Thompson said.
Details about the night and the attacks are still being collected, he said. Thompson encourages anyone with information about what happened that night to call Madison County Crime Stoppers or the Madison County Sheriff’s office.
