TB Lady Falcons take third at state basketball tournament

The Twin Bridges Lady Falcons finished third in the 2013 Class C basketball tournament last weekend in Belgrade, falling one game short of the title game with a loss to the Belt Lady Huskies on Friday.

The Lady Falcons began their run at the state title Thursday afternoon against the Hinsdale Lady Raiders. After trailing 20-21 at halftime, the Lady Falcons went into the fourth quarter with a five-point lead and began to pull away. Twin Bridges made the Lady Raiders pay for sending them to the free throw line, slowly building their lead through the final minutes of the game. By the time the clock ran out, the Lady Falcons were winning 51-37 and on the way to the semifinal game against Belt.

Friday afternoon’s matchup against the Lady Huskies proved to be a difficult for Twin Bridges from the start. While both teams went back and forth, finishing the first quarter tied at 14 points apiece, Belt pulled away from the Lady Falcons during the second quarter, outscoring Twin Bridges 20-2 to go into the locker room leading 34-16.

Coming out of halftime with a sense of desperation, the Lady Falcons made a run at Belt, outscoring them 11-5 in the third quarter to make it 39-27, but their efforts fell short to the Lady Huskies shooting, athleticism and defense inside the perimeter throughout the second half. As the final minutes ticked away, the Twin girls watched the eventual tournament champs Belt run away with a 59-39 win and a shot at the state title.

In the consolation bracket on Saturday, the Lady Falcons beat Drummond 45-32 to advance to a rematch against Hinsdale for third place in the tournament.
