Madison Conservation District talks climate impacts during watershed planning meeting

In January, the Madison Conservation District held the first of six meetings in an effort to get the community involved before preparing a watershed report. The first meeting, led by Ethan Kunard, water programs manager for the Madison Conservation District, focused on water quality and quantity in the Madison Watershed. The second meeting, held March 29, focused on how past, present and future climate conditions affect the watershed.

Madison County river basins see above average snowpack

Snowpack in the Upper Madison is well above normal for the month of March, according to a report from water supply specialist Lucas Zukiewicz, with the Natural Resources and Conservation Service’s Montana snow survey and water supply forecasting program. Snowpack above Hebgen Reservoir is 131 percent of normal, compared 86 percent at this time last year.

Spring storm report

A few hours after snow started falling in the Madison and Ruby valleys yesterday, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office dispatch started receiving calls.

“Starting at 2:30 p.m. reports started coming in,” said Sheriff Roger Thompson. “We had problems at higher elevations – Virginia City Hill and Norris Hill – with vehicles spinning out.”

The sheriff’s office closed both hill passes temporarily the afternoon of May 9, due to the number of vehicles spun out.
