The third week of March is a special one because the Irish, and many others, celebrate Saint Patrick’s Day! Though at its core, Saint Patrick’s Day is a religious holiday commemorating the death of Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint, it is more than that. It’s amazing how the celebration of a small island across the big pond has become a cultural holiday in many countries, especially the United States.
Sometimes, I say that as a mantra. I’d rather be busy than bored. I’d rather be busy than bored. I’d rather be busy than bored.
As an inner city bred gal, last weekend was my first hands-on introduction to actual ranch work. Since little Eddie – my new horse – and I are always looking for adventures, we accepted an invitation to help work cows before a branding.
Last week was full of ups and downs. Celebration and grief. Joy and sadness. I posted up in Manhattan Christian for the district basketball tournament for most of the week and experienced the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat with our Madison County teams.
We’re in the thick of one of my favorite times of the year – calving season! Mike works as a night calver for two straight months, and whenever I have a free evening I can’t stay away from the barn.
Showcasing our best
… And days spent with (wo)man’s best friend
Last week, I was once again reminded how generous our community is. I came to work early one morning and discovered a grocery bag tied to the front door handle. In the bag, I found beautifully wrapped packages with letters for two of The Madisonian’s columnists and someone we featured in the paper earlier this year. I quickly called or emailed the recipients of the packages and they came to collect their gifts.
Thoughts on being objective … and school spirit!
One of those non-traditional families
Madison County offers a variety of outdoor adventures, even in the winter. rom fly fishing to skiing – both downhill and cross-country, to ice skating and sledding – via snowmobile or the old fashioned way, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved and increase your heart rate.
