Sheridan woman dies in Tuesday morning accident

Sheridan resident Ruth Gayle Callahan died early Tuesday morning is a vehicle accident on the Virginia City hill just southwest of Ennis.

The accident occurred between 4 and 4:15 a.m. near mile marker 7 on Montana Highway 287, said Madison County undersheriff Roger Thompson.

Callahan, 51, appeared to have drifted off the left side of the road and then overcorrected to the right side. She tried to correct her jeep again and got sideways in the road and began to roll, Thompson said.

Her vehicle struck a tree on the left of uphill side of the road. “The vehicle started to roll and ended up hitting a tree right across where the driver was,” he said.

Life flight was called down from Bozeman and Callahan was transported by ambulance to the Madison Valley Medical Center, but medical personnel were unable to stabilize her, Thompson said.

The cause of the crash is unclear, but neither speed nor alcohol was involved.

Callahan, who was a former Sheridan School Board member, was driving for work delivering newspapers for the Montana Standard, Thompson said.
