Sheridan student takes home top honors at county spelling bee

The annual Madison County Spelling Bee was held last Wednesday in Virginia City.

Sixteen spellers from around the county participated in the event.

Arnold Smithson, a seventh grader from Sheridan took top honors, with second place going to eighth grader Jessica George from Twin Bridges and third place to Caelin Marum from Ennis.

Arnold will move on to compete at the state spelling bee later this month in Billings.

The Ruby Valley National Bank of Sheridan awarded $100 savings bond to Arnold and a $50 savings bond to George.

The spelling bee was coordinated by Madison County School Superintendent Judi Osborn, the pronouncer was Dawne Smith of Sheridan. Judges were Christina Lueck of Sheridan, Pat Bradley of Twin Bridges, and Sandy Pfau of Ennis. The tape recorder operator was Laurie Bartoletti of Sheridan.

The spellers at the event were: Brand Morgan and Isaac Bendon from Alder; Lexi Jones, Eddie Kelly and alternate Gregor Schwend of Twin Bridges; Ty Morgan, Cam Haag and alternate Peri Gump of Sheridan; Liam Germain, Bryson Glines and alternate Jourdain Klein of Ennis; Alexys Bacon, Matthew Strong and Stephanie Strong of Harrison; and Christa Thompson and Colton Barnosky of Ruby Valley Home Schoolers.
