At their regular meeting on Thursday, the Ennis Town Commissioners carried a motion to approve Resolution 498-2013. The resolution established the Main Street Sidewalk Repair Project designed to assist Main Street businesses and property owners in making commerce in downtown Ennis safer and more attractive and accessible.
The project will repair cracked and damaged sidewalks in front of businesses along Main Street. The Town has already worked with Great West Engineering to complete a map of problem areas. The town also plans to match approximately 50 percent of business owners’ construction costs with funds from a Community Transportation Enhancement Program (CTEP) grant through Madison County.
Sidewalk maintenance and repair is the responsibility of the property owner as per Ennis’ sidewalk ordinance and Town Commissioners strongly encourage Main Street business owners to take advantage of the voluntary project intended to assist financially in improving their sidewalks. Last week commissioners Alinon Arpin and Audra Bourk began approaching downtown businesses about their specific costs for the project.
“People seem generally into it,” Arpin said. “They took it as an opportunity to improve their property and I think it was met pretty well.”
The Town also partnered with local non-profit group, Madison Byways, who paid mobilization fees for construction and contracted AV Construction Company through a competitive bidding process for sidewalk construction work beginning on or before April 15, 2013. While the engineering and construction firms were selected to synchronize with the Lions Club Park Connection project, individual property owners have the right to pursue contractors of their choice but will not qualify for the matching grant of the program.
Participants who are interested in the project will need to submit a complete application with signed contract as well as a ten percent down payment for construction costs by March 1, 2013. The Main Street Sidewalk Repair Project will begin May 1, 2013, weather permitting and the remaining construction payments are due by Sept. 1, 2013.
