Great Catch!

LAURIN – The Ruby Habitat Foundation hosted a Labor Day family fishing outing at the former Woodson Ranch near Laurin on Monday, Sept. 3.

About 15 people were fishing on the Ruby River and in ponds nearby at 9 a.m.

The fishing event is an annual thing, said Dave Delisi, Ruby Habitat Foundation Outreach Coordinator.

The focus of the event is for families to share some outdoor time and get to know the ranch and its mission of blending conservation, agriculture, wildlife and recreation into a single package, Delisi said.

Ruby Executive Director Les Gilman was spending time with his family members Max, Braeden and Molly Gilman, cousins, he said.

When asked about the fishing Molly said she’d caught no fish. “Not yet,” and one has to admire that spirit in a lady angler so young.

Meanwhile, upstream, the Davis family – Anaiah, Eoin, Isaiah, and Ian; with their parents, Christen and Aaron – enjoyed sunshine, cool temperatures and a day off, a perfect time to go fishing..

When her rod and reel nearly got pulled off the dock, young Anaiah had hooked a fish.

Suddenly, there was great excitement on the dock, with Mom and Eoin, trying to figure out what it was, as she reeled the fish in (with Mom’s help).

Turns out Anaiah hooked a nice rainbow of about 16 – 18 inches.

With Dad’s help, she touched the sorta slimy fish and got it off the hook.

Trout will be what’s for dinner at the Davis family.

Ordinarily, said Delisi, the 8.5 miles of Ruby River the foundation has only hosts four rods per day.
