Slow start for spring sports

Whether you believe in the actions of a marmot named Punxsutawney Phil, or you think Mother Nature is just taking her course, winter has extended its stay in the state – much to the demise of Madison County’s spring athletes.

Golfers for the Ennis Mustangs had their first two meets of the season cancelled, according to head coach Chris McCown. “I’ll keep you posted when we hopefully go to future meets,” he said, adding the junior varsity would head to Townsend for a meet on April 11.

Track and field athletes are experiencing much of the same, as the April 7 meet in Belgrade was canceled, which Harrison, Sheridan and Twin Bridges had all planned-on attending. However, some schools have seen action on the track with meets in Frenchtown and Columbus at the end of March.

The Wildcats were in Frenchtown two weeks ago and saw some great success as the season begins. “We are super excited for Vern Homner,” exclaimed head coach Kaysha Young. “He had a rough season last year with a lot of ankle injuries. We haven't had a lot of time out on the field due to the weather and all the mud on the track and long jump pit, but he posted great numbers and we are excited to watch him progress.”

Coach Young said she is also excited about underclassmen Rosie Chater, who had a personal record in the 100 meter dash, despite a rough start out of the blocks.
