Shaw was wrong to vote for school cuts

Dear Editor,

In the light of recent events, it is imperative that we as the people of the state of Montana spend money to protect our schools from the forces of evil whether it is an armed exstudent or the state legislature cutting funding.

In the recent special session the Republican majority without input from the Democratic minority slashed school funding in a one sided effort to balance the budget. The Republicans also are cruelly punishing poor people with other funding cuts but that is a topic for another day. There are at least 2 ways to balance the budget. Slash funds or increase revenue. They chose the meanest way.

The Madisonian has already reported how many thousands of dollars each school district in our county will be reduced. Our representative, Ray Shaw did not vote to protect our citizens, schools and students but voted for the reductions. Clearly, he was putting party loyalty over the needs of our county.

What horrendous event will it take before the state legislature treats schools as an asset to our society and not just another line item to cut? What could be more important for a state legislature than to nurture the future leaders of our state? By voting for reduction of funds the legislature chose the greed of the 1-percenters over the needs of the citizens of our state. Shame on them.

Sincerely,

Ian Root

Ennis
