Sen. Jon Tester and Congressman Denny Rehberg have nominated two Madison County teens to apply for enrollment in a military academy.
Stephen Weddle and Westin McKinney have both been nominated by Tester to apply for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in New York.
Tester also nominated Weddle to apply to the Air Force Academy in Colorado.
Rehberg also nominated McKinney to apply to the Merchant Marine Academy.
The congressional nominations are a necessary part of the process for students to be admitted into four of the five service academies across the country. The Coast Guard Academy does not require a congressional nomination.
“These young leaders are among the best and brightest in our state, and it’s an honor for me to present them to the Military Academies,” Rehberg in a statement issued earlier this month.
Weddle and McKinney were among 41 students receiving Tester’s nomination.
“Montana has a rich tradition of military service and I’m proud of all young folks who dedicate themselves in service to our country. I congratulate Westin and Stephen and look forward to their future success,” Tester said in a statement.
Both Tester and Rehberg said their nominations were based on academic performance, leadership qualities and community involvement.
