Election season kicks off as candidates can begin filing

Election season is cranking up around the country and locally several seats are up for re-election.

Madison County is encompassed completely by Montana House District 71 and Representative Bob Wagner, a Republican from Harrison, is up for re-election.

The only county government position up for re-election is Dave Schulz’s commissioner seat for Commission District 1.

Four of the school districts in the county have board members up for re-election.

In Twin Bridges Joan Phillips and Lynn Hirschy are both up for re-election. In Sheridan, Rhonda Boyd, Gayle Callahan and Mike Berry are all up for re-election. In Harrison, Sandra Bailey is up for re-election. In Ennis, Gary Croy and Marc Glines are both up for re-election.

School election filing opened Dec. 25 and closes March 29. Candidates must pick up a nomination petition from their school clerks and obtain five signatures to be an official candidate. The school election is May 8.

All other candidates can begin filing for candidacy Jan. 12 and must have their information submitted by March 12.

People pursuing statewide office must file with the Montana Secretary of State.

Anyone seeking to run for county commissioner can pick up the appropriate information from the Madison County Clerk and Recorder’s office in Virginia City.
